Independent Bookstore Day 2019

Saturday, April 27, marks the fifth celebration of Independent Bookstore Day. Throughout the Northwest, bookstores are joining this one-day national party. Drop into your local bookstore to enjoy live readings from local authors, goodies, scavenger hunts, kids events, art tables, readings, barbecues, contests, or other fun stuff. Each store will celebrate the day differently but all will have exclusive books and literary items available only on Saturday.

Idyll Arbor Publisher Looking For New Leadership

Tom Blaschko, current owner of Idyll Arbor, is seeking new leadership for his publishing company. Idyll Arbor is currently located in Enumclaw, Washington, about an hour southeast of Seattle in the foothills of Mount Rainier.  “I intend to stay involved for a few years, so that the new leader or leaders and Idyll Arbor continue to be successful. But the long-term goal is to sell the business to the person who takes over,” said Blaschko. “I know the right people for this job are out there and will know this is exactly what she, he, or they want to be doing — just like I knew that it was the right thing for me to do.”

For 35 years, Idyll Arbor has worked improve the quality of health care provided to clients by providing quality information and resources to practitioners. “The largest part of our business, under the Idyll Arbor imprint, is publishing college textbooks for Recreational Therapists and Activity Professionals. We also publish information about therapy groups, activities, and practice issues for therapists and activity professionals working in facilities. Idyll Arbor also has some books for the general population on specific techniques, such as Expressive Writing, and treatments, such as hip replacement,” said Blaschko.

The company also has the Issues Press imprint, which looks at solutions to concerns in our society, such as veterans returning from wars with PTSD and TBIs and not finding effective treatment for those conditions. Under the imprint Pine Winds Press can be found books that look at our place in the universe, beyond physical reality.

How To Make An Author Appearance At PNBA Fall Show

Every year, representatives from approximately 85 bookstores and several Northwest libraries attend the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association Trade Show in the fall. A big part of the conference is author appearances at breakfasts, lunches, and the “sweet-and-greet” dessert events in the evenings.

Publicists and publishers looking to propose an author appearance at the PNBA Fall Trade Show 2019 should contact the organization this spring with information about author including links to author website, publisher listing, release date, relevant reviews and blurbs, and other information.

Publicists may request authors be featured at specific events, but invitations will be influenced by their Selection Committee rankings as well as PNBA’s commitment to providing a wide variety of authors at each event. Finished books or ARCs may be requested as part of the selection process.

Museum Book Fair In April

The Washington State History Museum is hosting a book fair featuring Washington authors, illustrators, and publishers on April 6, 2019. As part of the museum’s current exhibition “A Thousand Words’ Worth,” the book fair will feature a full day of activities at the museum including be author talks, zine making, letter writing, and interactive storytelling in the galleries

There may still be space to participate but don’t delay.  For those who just want to attend the fair, it will take place on April 6, 10 am to 5 pm, at the museum in Tacoma. For more information, see the Facebook event page.

PNBA’s 2019 Call for Education Proposals

Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association put out their call for presenters at their fall trade show.  Each year, the organization offers educational programming on the opening day of its annual Tradeshow. The 2019 tradeshow will be held at the Red Lion on the River in Portland, Oregon. PNBA will produce a full day of sessions, Sunday, October 6, the day prior to the opening of the exhibit floor.

They are looking for proposals for education aimed at librarians, small press publishers, and authors as well as sessions for bookstore owners.” The organizers add that they want “all sessions promote an atmosphere of cooperation among literary entities.Sales pitch presentations that are perceived to promote just one business solution or service are discouraged.”

Proposals for an educational session for the 2019 show should be submitted via the Education Proposal form on their website.

Two Northwest Bookstores Celebrate November Anniversaries

Island Books on Mercer Island, WA, turns 45 on November 1 and will celebrate on Saturday, November 3. Fans care invited to join the community celebration, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., and add to a 1970s memory wall.

Third Place Books, with stores in Lake Forest Park, Ravenna, and Seward Park also celebrates on November 3.  To mark 20 years in business, there will be food, drink, local lit band The Rejections, and Celebrity Jeopardy from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Lake Forest Park store.

Superhero Book Launch At Naked City

Seattle author Nathan Crowder and Northwest publisher DefCon One celebrate the release of the new Cobalt City novel, Resistance, on October 21 with readings from city creator Nathan Crowder and fellow guest authors at a popular Greenwood pub. Superhero fiction takes on tyranny with heart and humor, paired with the stellar tap list at Naked City for this Sunday afternoon event.

The publisher will have print editions for sale at the event. The print copy allows buyers to download a free ebook copy.

The event goes from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., October 21, at Naked City Brewery & Taphouse, 8564 Greenwood Ave N, in Seattle.

Yellowstone Treasures Nominated For Two Awards

Yellowstone Treasures, 5th edition

The updated fifth edition of Yellowstone Treasures (2017) is a finalist in both the IBPA Benjamin Franklin Awards and the Foreword INDIES Awards. ” I am pleased that this edition’s new cover, 65 new color photos, and geyser and wildlife updates have captured both IBPA’s and Foreword’s attention again this year,” said publisher Beth Chapple of Granite Peak Publications.

Epicenter Expands Through Acquisition

Epicenter Press, based in Washington and Alaska, has acquired Coffeetown Enterprises, LLC., which includes Coffeetown Press, Camel Press and Fanny Press imprints.  “We’re excited about the acquisition,” said Phil Garrett, president of Epicenter Press, in PNBA’s Footnotes. “This will allow us to publish in categories that weren’t currently represented in our line. It will also allow us to increase our title base and reach of the company.”

New Releases by BPNW member Entre Ríos Books

Entre Ríos Books, a BPNW member, has released three new poetry books this fall. Like their other books, their focus is on collaboration and the books come with audio to listen to the authors read their work.

A full-color collaboration on the politicalization of women’s bodies. Spokane poet, Maya Jewell Zeller, and Seattle artist, Carrie DeBacker, crafted a work of anxious poetics and eco-feminism, much of it created after the election. This book includes a film response by CWU student, Rebecca Starkey, winner of the first ERB Emerging Visions Filmmaker Award, given to women filmmakers in Washington State secondary or college programs.
