IBPA Publishing University 2020 Deadlines

The Independent Book Publishing Association is making plans for their popular Publishing University aimed at independent publishers as well as authors interested in publishing their own work. The 2020 Publishing University will take place in Redondo Beach, California, in April. The multi-day event covers everything from editing to marketing. Registration opens September 1, 2019.

To be held in the Crowne Plaza Redondo Beach and Marina Hotel from April 2-4, 2020, the event is expected to draw hundreds of independent publishers and authors from across the country together. Each year IBPA grants a number of scholarships for those publishers who would like to attend but can’t afford the fees.

Seattle Writes Offers Full Slate of Fall Classes

The Seattle Public Library’s program devoted to developing independent, diverse authors dives into fall with a series of free classes and other resources. From writing circles to deciding how to publish, these courses take place across the city in branch libraries and at Richard Hugo House.

Proposals Sought For Island Lit Festival

Organizers are seeking proposals for the third annual Orcas Island Lit Fest, taking place April 17 to 19, 2020. In particular, they would like to hear ideas for “that will appeal to book lovers who don’t necessarily write.” The deadline for submission is September 15, 2019. The Orcas Island Lit Fest is a community celebration of contemporary literary culture. The main festival events take place at The Orcas Center for Performing Arts. Additional events include the Orcas Island Kids’ Fest at the Orcas Island Library and a Friday-night Lit Walk featuring local and regional writers.

Sasquatch Publisher Retires

Published by Sasquatch Books

Longtime Sasquatch Books publisher Gary Luke will retire August 1. Jennifer Worick will manage Sasquatch’s adult publishing program and Jenny Abrami, associate publisher, will oversee the Little Bigfoot children’s imprint.

Founded in 1986 by David Brewster, Sasquatch Books started as an independent publisher specializing in Northwest authors and nonfiction books about nature, travel, gardening, entertainment, sports, food, and wine. Currently a part of the Penguin Random House family, the company still has its offices in downtown Seattle.

Sasquatch’s current catalog includes authors such as Nancy Pearl, Lynda Barry, and Art Wolfe, and top-selling titles in food, wine, travel, and gardening.

Short Run Comix & Arts Festival Returns

Seattle’s book festival dedicated to micropress publishing and graphic literature returns in November. Approximately 4,000 people attend the annual free event at the Seattle Center.

The curated show is currently accepting applications for exhibitors. Applications will be accepted until July 31, 2019. Final list of exhibitors will be selected by the Short Run Board of Directors and the organization’s Advisory Board made up of artists and art enthusiasts. “This is a book festival, so be prepared to demonstrate that your table space will feature at least 75% books. Your prints, t-shirts, original drawings, pins, buttons, etc.. are welcome, but should take up 25% or less of your merchandise,” say the organizers. Short Run is committed to opening up space to new artists and publishers every year.

Submissions Now Open For Oregon Book Awards

Publishers and writers can now submit their work for the 2020 Oregon Book Awards. Self-published titles are eligible for this award. The finalists will be announced in early 2020, and the winners will be announced at the Oregon Book Awards Ceremony in the spring of 2020.

Oregon Book Awards are available for original work by an Oregon author in the categories of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, creative nonfiction (autobiography, memoir, and personal essay), children’s literature, and young adult literature. The biennial award for graphic literature will be given in 2020.

To be considered for the Oregon Book Award, the work must be written by an Oregon resident whose legal residence is in Oregon at least six months of the year. Books must have an original publication date between September 1, 2018 and August 31, 2019.

All entries must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. on Monday, September 23, 2019. For further information and submission forms, see the Literary Arts website at literary-arts.org.

PNBA Exhibitor Registration Open

Northwest publishers looking to reach the book and library trade can now register for a table or booth at the Pacific Northwest Bookseller’s 2019 Tradeshow on October 6, 7, and 8 at the Red Lion on the River in Portland, Oregon.

Currently PNBA is offering one-day or two-day exhibition contracts. Anyone wanting to exhibit for the full two days must register by June 21. Costs range from $300 to $600 depending on the size of table or booth. Registration forms are available from PNBA here.

A layout of the show floor featuring all vendors will be available on the PNBA Tradeshow page in mid-August.
