Red Room CEO Ivory Madison sent out a letter to members today that the site will close on July 8. In the letter, reproduced below, she urged members to sign up for a new profile on Wattpad. Madison began the website in 2008 as an offshoot of The Red Room Writers Society, and it originally served as a review/blog site to connect writers and readers. More recently, Red Room had experimented with paid advertising and creating its own online ebook store for writers.
Dear Red Roomer,
I have big news. Red Room is becoming part of Wattpad! If you haven’t heard of Wattpad yet, it is the world’s largest community of readers and writers. Red Room Authors like Margaret Atwood–and authors we wish were on Red Room like Paulo Coelho–are already on Wattpad. So are more than 30 million readers! On Wattpad, readers and writers engage with each other, and previously unknown authors are finding phenomenal success. I want our amazing community members to have that opportunity. What happens next?
- Red Room will go offline on Tuesday, July 8th, 2014. You won’t be able to log in after that. If you ever need to view or copy your content, you can do so, thanks to our friends at the Internet Archive. Look for an email next week about this.
I am deeply grateful for your friendship and participation in the Red Room community. As I always say, writing transforms individuals and sometimes whole societies. Please let me know what I can do to make this move a big success for you, and I look forward to seeing you on Wattpad!
