Peter Kahle of 74th Street Productions reports that the University of Washington Press is raising funds to reinstate a graduate internship program and to convert backlist books to digital format.
Hard hit by the slumping market and the severe budget cuts imposed by the state government, UW Press has reduced staff by 40%, and cut titles published to 55 in 2009 (down from 84 in 2008).
The UW Press internship program provided training for future publishing professionals. The Graduate School has offered to match funds donated to these two funds, as detailed in an article in UW Week.
The new Technology Fund would help the press grow their digital offerings, potentially supporting other print publications.
