Lulu, Long Tails, and the Luminous Future of Ubiquitous Publishing
For most of its long history, book publishing has been dominated by those who controlled access to the printing presses, distribution channels and / or the mass media which modulated consumer tastes. But over the last few years a combination of technologies has emerged which now allows individuals with limited resources to play the role of publisher. Print on demand, online book retailing with an almost limitless capacity, and the viral buzz machine of the Internet (blogs, podcasts, YouTube) portend a golden age of democratized and ubiquitous publishing. We will discuss two examples of this new world of book publishing – the self publisher web site Lulu, and the emergence of book trailers (aka book wraps) as a new marketing tool.
